LGLC News for February 2024

The LGLC has been awarded a $86k grant to manage hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA) in Putnam

In late January, Governor Hochul announced the latest round of grants through the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation's Invasive Species Grant Program. The LGLC was awarded $86,215 to support our management efforts to control the invasive hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA) on the 60-acre Clark Hollow Bay property in the Town of Putnam.

LGLC Land Steward Alex Novick discovered an infestation of HWA at Clark Hollow Bay in the spring of 2023. This was the first time HWA had been found on LGLC protected property, and is at the northern frontier of the HWA infestation at Lake George and in the Adirondack Park.

Hemlocks are a dominant tree species in much of the forest surrounding Lake George, making HWA especially dangerous for the preservation of water quality and health of the whole lake ecosystem.

The grant will fund three years of additional monitoring and management activity at the Clark Hollow Bay Preserve.

12th Annual Hike-A-Thon: Registration opens March 4

The Lake George Hike-A-Thon is a free, family-friendly event that will take place on Friday, July 5th, with 25+ different groups around Lake George (and virtually). You can choose where you'd like to participate; sites vary in levels of difficulty to allow all abilities, from the drivable Prospect Mt. to 5+ mile challenging hikes.

We're excited to introduce a new stand-up paddleboard group in Northwest Bay, and a canoe/kayak group in Huddle Bay. Plus, returning from last year we're continuing the the challenging 7.5-mile Cat and Thomas loop, and the wooden boat Cruise-A-Thon!

Registration for the Hike-A-Thon will open at 8 a.m. (EST) on Monday, March 4. Many sites fill up FAST (within the first hour), so be sure to get in early! Everyone who signs up within the month of March will receive a free event t-shirt. Information about available sites, how to volunteer, and how to sponsor the event are all at lakegeorgehikeathon.org.

LGLC Intership Applications Due March 1

Summer internship applications due March 1

There's still time to get in your application for the LGLC's paid summer Programs Intern position for 2024. This position will support the work of our Conservation Program and Education and Outreach Program.

Work alongside conservation staff to learn about land monitoring, management, and stewardship, and help coordinate various summer events designed to educate the public about our mission, strengthen our brand, and fundraise for projects. The intern will have broad exposure to all facets of the LGLC’s operations.

This opportunity is made possible in part thanks to the George C. Singer Educational Fund, which was created and endowed by the Singer family to support LGLC's educational programs.
