HWA Training: Forest Pest Hunters

On Saturday March 11th, the LGLC and partners from the Adirondack Mountain Club (ADK) and Adirondack Park Invasive Plant Program (APIPP) hosted an educational program about the invasive hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA). The event was held at DEC’s Hearthstone Campground in Lake George, the site of a known HWA infestation.

During this hands-on program, participants learned about the life cycle, identification, and management of HWA, and were able to see real-life examples of infested hemlock trees. Participants also learned how to use iMapInvasives as a way to report the new infestations, so that the HWA can be treated promptly.

HWA is a tiny insect that has devastating impacts on the eastern hemlock tree, which is an important part of the Adirondack forest ecosystem and critical to preventing erosion and protecting water quality. The invasive insect was first found in the Lake George watershed in 2017, and since its initial discovery has been found in more than 300 acres of public land throughout the watershed. The LGLC has been involved with the on-the-ground identification and treatment of much of these lands.

Thank you to our partners at ADK and APIPP for making the event a success and for helping us to help hemlocks! If you would like to get involved with identifying and reporting HWA, please check out APIPP’s website about becoming a forest pest hunter.
