Protecting the Land that Protects the Lake since 1988

LGLC News for December 2023

Season's Greetings from the LGLC, and Warm Wishes for a Peaceful New Year

This was truly a year for community and partnerships, a fitting bookend to 35 years of protecting the land that protects Lake George. None of our work could be accomplished without the many people who donate, volunteer, participate in events and gatherings, and share our message with friends and family.

As we enjoy this holiday season and begin the new year, the LGLC board and staff are looking forward to doing even more great things for Lake George. We hope that you will continue to join us as we conserve the lake's forests, streams and wetlands, explore trails and wild spaces, share laughs and good food at events, and work together to protect this beautiful place we all love.

If you have already supported the LGLC this season, thank you! If you have not, please consider making a donation today to help us do more to protect the land that protects the lake for many years to come.

Reminder for Winter Hiking Safety

Winter is a great time to hit the trails - no bugs! Plus, you may have a popular Lake George trail all to yourself while enjoying the quiet calm of a snowy day. But winter weather brings extra challenges, so before you head out, it's especially important to be prepared. NYS Department of Environmental Conservation has a full page of winter hiking safety tips, including some short videos for how to layer and pack for a winter hike, as well as how to identify signs of hypothermia. Visit their winter hiking safety page for all of their great tips - they could be lifesaving!

If you're adventuring on NYS DEC lands, including the Cat and Thomas Mts and Pole Hill Pond Preserves in Bolton Landing, you should also check their Adirondack Backcountry page for updates on trail conditions throughout the winter. Conditions at different trails may be very different from wherever you call home; be safe and do your research before heading out!

Winter Plowing at LGLC Preserves

Please be aware that not all LGLC parking areas are plowed in winter. The LGLC does NOT plow its northern preserves: Cook Mt, Sucker Brook Preserve (Gull Bay/Last Great Shoreline), Leeming Jelliffe Preserve, or Anthony’s Nose. Also, the NYS DEC Pole Hill Pond Preserve in Bolton is not regularly plowed.
