| | Giulia Casella Joins the LGLC Team The Lake George Land Conservancy is pleased to announce the addition of Giulia Casella as our Fundraising and Events Manager. Giulia will be leading the LGLC’s events, which strengthen relationships and educate supporters about the importance of land protection work in maintaining Lake George’s water quality and preserving the character of the Lake George region. She will also assist with year-round fundraising efforts that enable us to protect the land that protects the Lake. “I have always dreamed of being able to do meaningful work close to home," said Giulia, "and I couldn’t think of a better way to do so than joining the Lake George Land Conservancy. | | Love and Land, Continued - Stories! Last month we shared a page from Amy's Park's log-in book on which someone had written, "Proposed, she said yes!!" We love being part of these moments and wanted to hear more, so we asked you for your stories to share about how Lake George, hiking, and finding love on the trails. Below are two such stories, and we thank them for sharing! |
| Adam Pensel and Emily Lovering Submitted by Adam Pensel Emily and I are both avid hikers, so when we first started dating, we would frequently text each other during the day to see if we wanted to hike the Schumann Preserve after work. Due to its close proximity to where we live, and its beautiful views, we have spent a ton of time there together over the years. So when I set out to propose to her in a way that would catch her off guard, while also paying homage to our roots, I couldn't think of a better place than the gazebo on a seemingly innocuous Wednesday afternoon. We are both very appreciative of what LGLC does to protect Lake George, and to provide our community with amazing places to spend our days like the Schumann Preserve. |

| Brendan and Rain Lindaman Submitted by Brendan's mother, Patricia Lindaman Our son, Brendan proposed to his girlfriend, Rain when they reached the top Cat mountain in the spring of 2010. She told us that when he said he had a question for her she thought he wanted some input from her on where they should have lunch! Anyway, she said yes and they were married September 2011. They now have a daughter, Aurelia who is 7 and a son , Malcolm who is 5. Both kids are avid island campers and hikers who hiked to First Peak and Shelving Rock Mountain last summer. They hope to do a snowshoe hike this winter and they are gearing up for Black Mountain this summer! |

| | HWA Field Training at Buck Mountain On February 14th, the LGLC held a field training with partners from the Adirondack Park Invasive Plant Program (APIPP). Landowners, land managers, and citizen scientists met in Fort Ann to practice hands-on hemlock identification and to see real samples of the invasive insect hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA). This training is a follow up to last month’s webinar, hosted by a partnership between Adirondack Park Invasive Plant Program, Adirondack Mountain Club, Capital Region PRISM, Lake George Land Conservancy, NYS iMapInvasives, and NYS Hemlock Initiative. HWA is a tiny forest pest that feeds on and kills eastern hemlock trees. Eastern hemlocks are the most common tree in the Lake George Watershed, and play a crucial role in preventing erosion and providing wildlife habitat. HWA was first identified in the Lake George region in 2017, and has since been identified at a number of sites. The LGLC has been involved with early detection and rapid response throughout the watershed to save infested trees and to slow the spread of HWA. In addition, the LGLC monitors all of our preserves for HWA throughout the winter, and monitors hemlock health throughout the year. Trained volunteers are crucial to slowing the spread of HWA—the more trained eyes that we have looking for HWA, the better chance we have at finding it and managing it quickly. If you are interested in helping us protect the hemlocks that protect the lake, watch a training and then adopt a trail to monitor! |

| | It's Mud Season! As the days get longer and this wonderful sunshine melts the snow and ice off the ground, it can be tempting to head out to your favorite trail. However, please consider the fact that the thawing ground needs time to drain off and absorb all of that melting snow and get solid again before it can welcome your boots safely and sustainably. If you do head out, make sure you are prepared for what may lay ahead - muddy, slippery trails. Choose trails that are designed with erosion and water control in mind, like our Schumann Preserve at Pilot Knob. Wear waterproof boots so you can stay on the trail regardless of its muddiness; avoid walking around wet areas to minimize damage to the surrounding vegetation and soil. For more tips on hiking during mud season, check out this post from Leave No Trace, or DEC's page about Spring Recreation Tips. Thank you for helping us keep our trails, and the watershed, healthy! |
