9:00 AM EST to Noon
UPDATE: As of February 15th, this event is canceled due to the forecasted weather. We will reschedule the field training for a date in early March. Please check the LGLC Events page for updates.
Join the Lake George Land Conservancy (LGLC) and the Adirondack Park Invasive Plant Program for a guided snowshoe walk to learn how to identify hemlock trees, survey for hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA), and report your findings in iMapInvasives as well as to refresh your snowshoe and winter safety skills. This field event is designed to gain experience after participating in an HWA webinar. Register here for this year’s free virtual webinar on February 16 at 10:00am or watch the 2021 recorded webinar here.
Field Event Date: Thursday, February 17, 2022
Time: 9:00AM-Noon
Location: Shelving Rock Area of the Lake George Wild Forest; Meet at Parking Lot #6 on Shelving Rock Road
Cost: FREE, registration is required
Google Map Directions: https://goo.gl/maps/vJzeH9PKwdQ18rU86
Details: Park at Parking Lot #6 on Shelving Rock Road. The parking lot is on the left, approximately 5 miles past where Sly Pond Road turns into Shelving Rock Road. There will be signage along the road to guide you to the parking area and event. The hike will begin at Parking Lot #6 of the Shelving Rock Area of Lake George Wild Forest and will proceed through moderate terrain for about 0.75 miles. You will be going off the main trail to survey and may need to navigate steep or uneven terrain. The total round trip distance is approximately 1.5 miles.
Snowshoes are required and participants will be going off the trail to practice HWA surveying. Survey results will be recorded in iMapInvasives so bring your mobile device with the iMapInvasives app downloaded. (Click here for iMapInvasives installation instructions.) A high-powered headlamp is very helpful for surveying.
Note: If the event must be canceled due to inclement weather, we will email you to alert you as soon as possible.
