Protecting the Land that Protects the Lake since 1988

LGLC News for July 2022

The nation's oldest continually running women's retreat center, Wiawaka has 60 acres of land on both sides of Rt 9L. The LGLC is purchasing a conservation easement on 47 acres of forested land on the slopes of French Mountain.  Photo by Carl Heilman, II/Wild Visions, Inc. shows the shorefront property as well as the uplands.

LGLC Partners with Wiawaka on Conservation Project

On June 24, 2022, the Lake George Land Conservancy and Wiawaka Center for Women announced our partnership to conserve 47 acres of upland forest with a conservation easement. Under this conservation easement, the land will continue to be privately owned by Wiawaka, and the LGLC will ensure the land’s permanent protection and assist with its stewardship.

Located in the Town of Lake George, Wiawaka is a non-profit organization and the longest continually operating women’s retreat center in the country. The center was founded in 1903 as a destination for women working in the factories of Troy, NY, to escape the city and enjoy an affordable vacation. Today, Wiawaka continues to offer affordable accommodations and weekly programming, retreats, and evening lectures from mid-June to early September.

The upland property to be protected is a forested tract that contains over 1,500 feet of stream corridor and five acres of wetland within the southern basin of Lake George.

There's Still Time to Double Your Impact with the Beaty Family Challenge!

In June, the LGLC announced a matching challenge of $325,000 in support of its Clark Hollow Bay project, presented by the Beaty Family. Since then, more than $115,000 has been donated to the project and matched, bringing us even closer to completing the $5 million project this summer.

The Beaty Family Challenge is being gifted in memory of James (Jim) Beaty by his two brothers, wife, son and a cousin. The Beatys’ love of Lake George’s pristine beauty began generations ago when Jim’s grandfather, Dr. Albert Corscaden, bought a piece of land in Hague and built a house there in 1914.

The family has supported the LGLC and its efforts to preserve Lake George since its inception in 1988. In 2011 the family underwrote the installation of an entry gate to Peggy’s Point in Hague in memory of their mother, Julia Beaty. The Challenge now offered in memory of Jim Beaty is another testament to their family’s dedication to the Lake and investment in its future.

Fund-A-Need is Now Open!

The Beaty Challenge for Clark Hollow Bay is also one of three projects in this year's Fund-A-Need, which typically takes place during our annual Land & Water Conservation Celebration. Because the event is sold out, and to help get a kick-start on these critical projects, we're opening the Fund-A-Need now, so that anyone who loves Lake George and wants to help, can!

The Fund-A-Need is your chance to help the Lake George Land Conservancy tackle its most pressing needs. Each year, we select several projects that are ready to launch or close to finishing. Any and all donations are welcome and appreciated and will earn you the chance to win one of three prizes, which will be announced the night of the Celebration - stay tuned!

This year's projects are Clark Hollow Bay, Wiawaka Uplands, and Invasive Species Management:

Clark Hollow Bay

With your help, we are now positioned to complete the Clark Hollow Bay project thanks to the Beaty Family Matching Challenge!

Wiawaka

Help us kick off this exciting project with Wiawaka to permanently protect 47 forested acres in the south basin!

Support the LGLC's monitoring for invasive species, and management of infestations throughout the watershed.

Learn More with the Discovery Series and Living Lands!

There are still lots of programs ahead in our Discovery Series and Living Lands Series, all free and open to all ages!

The Discovery Series takes place at a preserve in Bolton Landing for a hands-on experience while learning about nature, wildlife, ecosystems and more! These family-friendly outings are led by the Naturalists at Up Yonda Farm and vary in locations and hike distances, though all are considered easy to moderate and last 1 to 2 hours.

The Living Lands Series provides 1-hour indoor presentations that are more geared towards adults, but are open to all. Topics range from geology and the water cycle, to history and culture. Presentations are held Wednesday evenings at 5:30 pm, in the LGLC's conference room.

Registrations are required for all of our programs, since space is limited. For a complete list of all programs, visit our Events calendar or click below for more details.
